About This Degree

Writing is a basic form of communication that has survived many changes over the years. There are many reasons for and types of writing. While some are great verbal communicators, others feel more at ease when they are able to sit down with their thoughts and put everything in writing. Depending on one's ability to convey their thoughts on paper, everyone's style of writing and ability to write varies greatly.

Informative writing is usually fact based, such as a how-to article or newspaper article. There are sources that can be listed to identify how the information was obtained. This type of writing is usually free from personal opinion or agendas.

Creative writing is a form of writing that depends solely on the writer's mind. This type of writing can be fiction or non-fiction. In other words, the writing can be completely created by the writer with some or none of the content being based on fact. The creative form of writing can be short stories, novels, or scripts for movies and plays. Another creative way to express one's thoughts or imagination is through poetry. Poetry also has many forms and can cover just about any topic available.

Writing ability does not come naturally to everyone. When trying to write about any topic, even the most experienced writer can get stuck in a writer's block, a block of time where a writer's ability to think of material seems to freeze. The best way to overcome this and still be able to write effectively would be to brainstorm. Writing clearly sometimes involves writing something messy first. For those who find writing challenging, brainstorming is especially helpful because it allows the writer to sit down and think about what they want to write about, what specific topics they would like to cover and what details they would like to include. Because a large part of the writing process involves organization, brainstorming helps a writer to organize their thoughts and structure their ideas into something that flows and runs smoothly when someone else reads it.

While writing comes in many forms and is easier for some and not others, writing is something that can and should be practiced often. The end result of being a great communicator is definitely worth it.
