Financial Aid Info: UMUC participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan program, which is available to undergraduate and graduate students. These federal loans may be subsidized (based on need) or unsubsidized (not based on need). Subsidized loans begin to accrue (accumulate) interest when repayment begins (six months after you leave school or your attendance drops below half-time), while unsubsidized loans begin to accrue interest as soon as the loan is fully disbursed. Award amounts are based on grade year classifications and vary each year.
The Federal Perkins Loan program is a low-interest, subsidized loan available to undergraduate and graduate students, whereby UMUC serves as your lender. Award amounts are based on need and availability of funds, and range up to $4,000 annually. In addition to these federal loan programs, parents of dependent undergraduate students may take advantage of the Federal Direct PLUS Loan program, which offers non-need-based federal loans. Graduate students can also borrow through the Federal Direct PLUS Loan program (known as the Graduate PLUS Loan program), in addition to the subsidized and unsubsidized Direct Loan programs.
Merit based scholarships: UMUC offers more than 50 unique scholarship programs for undergraduate and graduate students, including the prestigious UMUC President’s Scholarship. Students can also apply and be considered for several different Maryland state scholarship programs, such as the coveted Legislative (Senatorial and Delegate) Scholarships.
Athletic based scholarships: N/A
Other scholarships: For more scholarship information, please visit UMUC online at http://www.umuc.edu/financialaid/scholarships/02_programs.shtml.
Grants: Grants are need-based financial awards that do not have to be repaid. Grants vary depending on the student’s enrollment status and need level. Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, and Maryland Part-Time Grants are need-based awards designated for undergraduate students only, but the UMUC President’s Grants program offers aid to both undergraduate and graduate students. Educational Assistance Grants, a need-based program for undergraduate Maryland residents, usually awards from $400 to $3,000 annually. The Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) and National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant are new federal grants available to full-time undergraduate students at UMUC.
Campus Description: While an increasing number of students choose the convenience of UMUC’s award-winning online education programs, they also may complete coursework in traditional classrooms at more than 150 worldwide locations, including more than 20 on-site classroom locations throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. Whether online or in the classroom, students have access to extensive resources to aid them in their students as well as the opportunity to connect with other students and join groups, clubs, and honor societies.
Facilities: Effective Writing Center:
The Effective Writing Center’s mission is to help UMUC students improve their writing by addressing a variety of writing issues, modeling excellent writing, and furnishing rationales for all comments on papers and through our various resources and services. The Effective Writing Center offers a variety of online writing services and resources to all UMUC students and faculty, including those in all three divisions of Europe, Asia, and the United States, in both the School of Undergraduate Studies and the Graduate School of Management and Technology. The EWC provides 24/7 one-to-one online writing advice by experienced, trained advisors to all UMUC students.
Library Resources:
Finding books and journal articles to compile a list of relevant materials used to be a matter of going to the library and using the card catalog in conjunction with print journal indexes. Today, libraries, and their methods for providing access to research information, have changed remarkably. Libraries provide access to information through print materials, electronic databases and catalogs, and Internet resources. Understanding how to select and use the appropriate resources for specific information needs is the key to successful research. To become adept at locating and using information for research, you must know about the many different resources available to you.
As a currently enrolled UMUC student, you can use the library catalog to place holds on books and have them delivered to any USM library, the Annapolis Center or Waldorf Center for Higher Education for pickup. In addition, you can access full-text articles on the Web and either print, download, or e-mail them to your desktop.
Academics: UMUC's curriculum is designed and taught by experts in their respective fields, not to mention that our faculty members have interesting hobbies, experiences, and credentials to their names. You never know, your professor may be a robotics competition judge, a creator of documentaries, an acclaimed artist, or a respected contributor to law enforcement who has interviewed some of the world's most infamous criminals.
Admissions: The admission policies of UMUC are designed to meet the needs of adult, part-time students. Most applicants who have a high school diploma or the equivalent can be admitted and register for undergraduate courses. In most cases, neither transcripts nor test scores are required at the time of admission. By the end of the first semester, a student who plans to earn a degree at UMUC must make sure that official transcripts have been sent from each institution previously attended.
The Graduate School does not require the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) for admissions to the master’s degree and certificate programs. The completed application for admissions must be accompanied by an application fee.
Applicants for the Doctor of Management program have different requirements.
